Donna Lee Nyzio is a talented local oil painter with a focus on realism. After studying under David Leffel, Sherrie McGraw, Gregg Kreutz, Dru Blair, Paul McCormich and Dan Beck, Nyzio has turned her attention to working as a full time artists and helping to teach the value of art in our seaside town.
Since beginning to explore painting, Nyzio strived to be accurate in proportion, value, and color, enjoying the challenge that came with creating truly lifelike pieces of art. Today, she is developing her work to find the essence of an object or scene, commonly referred to as abstract realism.
“I have been experimenting with a larger world of color and atmosphere, and finally light flowing like water into color.”
Nyzio has been traveling cross country, to the west coast and back home, to learn the art of plein aire, or painting outside and on site. For a year, the artist developed her color range and brushwork by using landscape as a subject matter, and we at Beaufort Wine and Food are thrilled to see how this newfound knowledge defines her featured artwork.
“I like to teach because I like to learn. I have not yet reached my full painting potential and teaching creates more learning challenges, increasing my abilities. I am not the best painter, but I love to paint and still have much to learn. By teaching, you learn even more from the questioning of others and from trying to see from their point of view. I believe everyone can paint and draw and if I can help them reach their goals and expend their abilities, we all benefit.”
Each year, our featured artist donates their painting for Beaufort Wine and Food to auction off at the Grand Reserve Tasting and Auction, raising money to donate to our partner charities. This year’s auction will be held on April 30th.
The image of the featured painting is used in all of our publicity and printed on t-shirts. Fine art printed posters with the featured painting are sold throughout festival weekend and all year round – each one hand signed by the artist. We look forward to revealing Donna Nyzio’s featured work of art in March 2016!
